The clean formula revolution in beauty, utilizing simple, eco-friendly raw materials, has led to a greener approach within our industry. This has led to the need to develop sustainable packaging as a united front. Sustainable packaging strives to utilize recycled materials, safer disposal, energy-efficient manufacturing, decreased toxic emissions and reduced plastic pollution. Together we can reduce destructive global impact.

There are three levels of packaging to consider when evaluating sustainability… primary, secondary, and tertiary. Each level plays a role in improving our environmental footprint. At WORMSER GROUP we provide sustainable solutions to each level of packaging.

 
 

Some key insights to consider when incorporating sustainable packaging into your product launch:

  1. Utilize less packaging as it’s undoubtedly the quickest, fastest approach in reducing our environmental footprint.

  2. Develop primary packaging with eco-friendly materials. See below for some helpful definitions.

  3. Develop secondary packaging with recycled materials including PCR Paper (a portion recycled material), Kraft Paper (portion made from wood pulp), Pulp Paper (portion made of wood, fiber, recycled paper and rags) and many others (e.g. Sugar Cane, Hemp).

  4. Create finishes and decoration with eco-friendly materials such as soy based inks and bio-degradable laminates and foils. 

  5. Review warehouse and shipping efficiencies including condensed palette sizes, reduction of weight, use of recycled corrugate and improved pack-out for reduced damages.

Sustainable Material Definitions

  • PCR: Post Consumer Resin (PCR) offers an environmentally friendly option utilizing the support of recycling materials to reduce landfills.

  • PCR Glass: Glass is 100% recyclable. PCR Glass offers 30-50% of recycled glass made from the recycled glass cullet. Consider the number of glass bottles recycled every year around the world.

  • PCR Plastic: PCR Plastic is created utilizing a portion of readily available, recycled materials from existing PET, HDPE and other plastics. Consider the number of water bottles recycled every year around the world.

  • Marine Plastics: Ocean plastic refers to the harmful pollution and dyes that enter marine life along as well as our food chain through water pollution. We have resources to utilize ocean waste to help clean our waters.

  • Aluminum: Aluminum is 100% recyclable and can be melted and recycled multiple times without changing its natural properties.

  • Bio-Resins: Eco-friendly, bio-resins are derived from natural plant, vegetable and biological sources. This means they are non-toxic, renewable and water based (vs. solvent). Some examples are corn, soybean, sugar cane, beets and potatoes.
